Reducing waste from entering rivers and landfills 🌱

On 29 November 2023  Artelia Philippines’ Head of Business Development and Marketing & Communications John Rey Dañgilan, Jr., was a guest speaker at the Nordic Chamber of Commerce Philippines: “Sustainability Committee Meeting” where he had the opportunity to share insights on the topic of organic waste treatment.
In the presentation, John Rey shared Artelia’s project to study and develop a pilot project to treat organic waste in Pasay City, Manila. This project is in coordination with SYCTOM, MMDA, Pasay LGU and SM Mall of Asia.
The goal for this project is to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. According to the World Resources Institute, 2% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions originate from landfills. As waste decomposes in landfills, they start producing gases such as methane and carbon dioxide. Artelia is glad to be able to support a solution to this growing problem, and hope to scale up.
John Rey also shared his experience as the project manager involving several stakeholders. Artelia’s role is to study the project’s feasibility and engineering, including the design and construction management of the organic waste treatment facility. Furthermore, Artelia shall also assist in the operations and maintenance of the facility for a 12-month period before turning over to MMDA.
